The Line She Made is an immersive mixed reality (MR) experience that delves into the intergenerational bond between a grandmother and granddaughter, using a sewing machine as their connecting thread.

Responding to the Atterbury Flat as a living, ‘live-in’ archive part of London Design Festival. We explored how mixed reality (MR) could transform an archive from something merely observed into an experience that one can actively enter and engage with. Through overlaying traces from different time periods onto the present-day flat, MR allows the contemporary space to coexist with stories that are no longer physically visible.

Drawing inspiration from Chelsea College of Arts’ history as part of the Polytechnic Institution, particularly the 1949 Domestic Science course that trained women in home management, and acknowledging the location’s past as an officer’s flat, we emphasise the space’s domestic character.

The sewing machine ultimately serves as a portal, connecting generations and inviting us to explore how ideas of female creativity, labour, and self-expression have evolved, revealing what has been inherited, remembered, or left behind.
